Course Description: 

The purpose of the Special Topics course is to provide you with an advanced level of knowledge of nutrition, nutrition and aging, nutrition assessment, and dietary prescription (including supplements). Topics for enrollees will include special dietary considerations for pain, arthritis, inflammation, allergies, toxins, clinical nutrition for the lifespan (youth and older adult), the microbiome, athletics, and emerging research. The course will be presented in a multimedia approach including visual, auditory, and interactive components to optimize learning for all participants.

This course is not designed to train the rehab professional to prescribe supplements or diets, nor does it replace prudent referral to licensed dietary services. 

 

Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the concept of systemic inflammation and how it can negatively impact rehabilitation and patient outcomes
  2. Describe how systemic inflammation can come from a patient’s diet and how it can delay healing and promote pain
  3. Outline a diet prescription for a patient with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and/or tendon pain according to peer-reviewed evidence
  4. Explain the current evidence for supplements used for conditions commonly seen in clinical practice
  5. Explain what constitutes the gut biome
  6. Articulate how the gut biome influences multiples systems, especially the brain, which can impact recovery from injuries seen in clinical practice
  7. Describe the clinical dietary assessment and  needs of women that are pregnant to reduce pain, prevent pelvic floor dysfunction, and promote health for baby
  8. Detail the clinical dietary assessment and needs of infants to promote development
  9. Explain the the clinical dietary assessment and needs of older adults to improve balance, cognition, prevent falls/fractures
  10. Describe the clinical dietary needs for athletes to improve performance, optimize recovery, and prevent injury
  11. Describe the impact of diet on clinical management related to the integumentary system
  12. Analyze and make recommendations for patient cases related to nutrition and: athletes, older adults, pregnancy, arthritis, gut biome, and chronic pain.

The instructors
Dr. Sean M. Wells
DPT, PT, OCS, ATC/L, CSCS, NSCA-CPT, Cert-DN

Dr. Sean M. Wells is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, National Athletic Trainers’ Association, and The National Strength and Conditioning Association. Dr. Wells has taught wellness, nutrition, athletic training, and exercise physiology at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). He is current owner of Wells Physical Therapy, a concierge physical therapy and training service serving Ponte Vedra, St Augustine, Naples, and Bonita Springs, FL.

His research interest includes lower back pain, nutrition and healing, and aging mechanisms/models. Sean has been published in the area of orthopedics, aging and nutrition, and fitness. He has helped to author and publish three international peer-reviewed journal articles on nutrition and aging mechanisms. He has published one book on the dangers of CrossFit and is currently working on his 2nd book, Nutritional Physical Therapy. He is second author on Wellness and Physical Therapy 2nd Edition, with contributions for nutrition, community wellness and dry needling. He was contributing author to the fitness section of a South Florida magazine for 3 years, and has been featured in Redbook, Muscle and Fitness Magazine, and Eat This Not That blog. Sean provides an array of services from concierge physical therapy, to post-rehab programs, to personal training, with an overarching emphasis on orthopedics, geriatric health, and fitness.
